Black Friday emails for Shopify: what to send and when

Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026. Here is what to send and when, the Klaviyo settings behind the launch email that never went out, how to keep people from unsubscribing, and how to check the results in Shopify's own reports.

The short answer

Send a Black Friday email sequence, not one blast. Warm up engaged subscribers from November 3, open early access before Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26, 2026), launch on Black Friday morning (November 27), remind non-buyers over the weekend and close on Cyber Monday night (November 30). Then count the orders in Shopify, not the email dashboard.

When is Black Friday 2026, and when should your emails start?

Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 26, on the federal holiday calendar from the Office of Personnel Management.

Shopify’s guide to Cyber Monday puts Black Friday on the Friday after Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday on November 30. Your first Black Friday email should go out weeks ahead of that weekend.

Adobe’s holiday shopping data counted $11.8 billion in US online spending on Black Friday 2025 and $14.25 billion on Cyber Monday. It was the second season in a row that Black Friday grew faster than Cyber Monday, as shoppers took the deals that started sooner.

“Competitive and persistent deals throughout Cyber Week pushed consumers to shop earlier”

Vivek Pandya, lead analyst, Adobe Digital Insights, Adobe: Cyber Monday Hits Record $14.25 Billion in Online Spending

For a Shopify store, that means your best customers should hear about the sale ahead of the weekend, not during it. By Friday, your email is competing with every other store’s biggest send of the year.

What is the 2026 Black Friday email calendar?

Here is a send calendar with real dates for 2026. Every send after the Friday launch goes only to people who have not ordered since the sale began. A small list can skip the Saturday and Sunday emails.

The VIP dates follow Klaviyo’s Black Friday sending guide, which suggests emailing VIPs on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before Black Friday. The same guide says the busiest sending hour for Klaviyo customers on Black Friday 2024 was 9 to 10 in the morning, Eastern time.

Orders peaked soon after. Klaviyo customers saw peak order volume between noon and 1 in the afternoon, Eastern time.

Shopify’s BFCM 2025 results show $14.6 billion in merchant sales over the weekend. The peak minute came at 12:01 in the afternoon, Eastern time, on Black Friday.

The evenings matter too. Adobe found Cyber Monday spending peaked between 8 and 10 at night, which is why the last call goes out after dinner.

Who should get your Black Friday emails?

Your engaged subscribers first, then the wider list for the one or two sends that matter most. Klaviyo’s help center on building an engaged segment says regular campaigns should go to engaged profiles. For large promotions such as Black Friday, it says you can consider widening your lists.

The reason is the inbox. Mailbox providers read engagement signals such as clicks, spam complaints and unsubscribes, and a sudden jump in volume looks like spam.

“Holidays bring an avalanche of email for inbox providers”

Autumn Tyr-Salvia, senior deliverability strategist, Klaviyo, 5 ways to get your deliverability in order ahead of BFCM

In that avalanche, delivery can slow down, and inbox providers favor senders whose email people act on. Gmail’s email sender guidelines ask every sender to keep reported spam below 0.3 percent, and suggest staying below 0.10 percent.

How do you warm up the list for the sale?

Send to engaged people on a steady schedule in October and the first half of November, so the Friday volume is not a shock. Klaviyo’s deliverability strategist Bill Biggers advises starting list cleanup at least three months before BFCM. His tool is a sunset flow for people who have not clicked in 12 months.

From mid-September, Black Friday is about ten weeks away, so the cleanup starts now. The same Klaviyo article warns that big changes to your branding or content can make inbox providers re-evaluate your reputation, so hold any new email design until January.

Who counts as engaged?

Build the segment on clicks, orders and recent sign-ups, not opens. Apple Mail opens email on its own, so an open can be a machine. The guide to why a 92 percent open rate is not real shows how far that can skew a list.

Will Black Friday emails make people unsubscribe?

Some people will, especially if the emails come too often. Klaviyo’s help center on email frequency preferences warns that coming on too strong risks new sign-ups unsubscribing right away.

If watching the unsubscribe count climb after a big send makes you want to go quiet, that instinct is half right. The fix is fewer emails for the people who want fewer, not a smaller launch for everyone.

An unsubscribe is also not the worst outcome. Klaviyo stops emailing anyone who marks an email as spam, and Gmail’s sender rules say spam reports can lower your domain’s reputation over time. The same page says letting people opt out easily can improve open rates, click-through rates and sending efficiency.

How do you keep people on the list through Cyber Monday?

  • Offer fewer, not only out. Klaviyo’s preference page can ask how often someone wants to hear from you. A short note before the sale can offer the choice: every email, or only the launch and the last call.
  • Use the answer. Klaviyo suggests building segments from those preferences to include or exclude in each send, so the “fewer” group skips the weekend reminders.
  • Stop emailing buyers. Every send after the launch goes only to people who have not ordered.
  • Watch every send. Klaviyo’s campaign report shows the unsubscribe rate and the spam complaint rate. If either jumps on Saturday, drop the Sunday email.

Gmail also suggests checking in from time to time to confirm people still want your email. A pre-sale note does that job and fills your frequency segments at the same time.

Which Klaviyo settings can quietly skip your Black Friday emails?

Several defaults that are harmless in a normal week can drop people from a Black Friday send without an obvious warning. If your dashboard said last year’s emails went out and your Shopify orders disagreed, you are not imagining it.

As of September 2026, these are the settings Klaviyo’s help center describes.

Why can a second email on the same day reach nobody?

Because of Smart Sending. Klaviyo’s help center on Smart Sending says it is on by default for every campaign, with a 16 hour window for email.

Anyone who got an email in the last 16 hours is skipped, and skipped messages are not rescheduled. A Friday evening reminder to people who got the morning launch will skip them unless you turn Smart Sending off for that one campaign.

The same rule can swallow the launch itself. A teaser sent at 6 on Thursday evening still counts at 9 on Friday morning, and so does a welcome email a new sign-up got that night. Both groups are skipped, which is how a store ends up with a Black Friday email that never went out.

The answer is not to switch Smart Sending off everywhere. Klaviyo recommends keeping it on for most marketing emails. Space the big sends at least 16 hours apart, and turn it off only for the few sends meant to reach the same people twice within 16 hours.

Then read the report after each send. Klaviyo’s guide to skipped profiles in email campaigns says it shows how many people were skipped because they received another email too recently.

Why can new subscribers miss a campaign you scheduled days ahead?

Klaviyo’s guide to campaign schedule and send options says it takes a snapshot of the list the moment you click Schedule. People who join after that are not added, unless the setting to determine recipients at send time is on. It is off by default.

Local time zone sends have the same catch. If you send in each recipient’s local time zone, Klaviyo says no new recipients are added after you click Schedule.

SettingWhat it does on Black FridayWhat to do
Smart SendingSkips anyone emailed in the last 16 hoursTurn it off only for planned same-day reminders to a narrow segment
Recipient snapshotFreezes the list when you scheduleTurn on determine recipients at send time for campaigns scheduled days ahead
Send on the hourKlaviyo says sending can be slower on the hour and half hourType an off-peak minute, such as 9:07 instead of 9:00
Smart Send TimeNeeds at least 12,000 recipients to test, and Klaviyo advises against it for time-sensitive offersUse a fixed morning time in each subscriber’s local time zone
Plan limitsA campaign over your plan’s limit can be throttled if auto-upgrade and flexible sending are offCheck the plan ahead of the widest send
Countdown timersKlaviyo has no built-in timer, and a third-party timer can show the wrong time in Apple MailWrite the end date and time in plain text too

The details come from Klaviyo’s help articles on Smart Send Time, email throttling and countdown timers. The throttling article adds a catch: the warning may not appear if many profiles joined between scheduling and sending.

What if a Black Friday send looks stuck?

Check the status page before you rebuild or resend it. Shopify’s help center page on the admin points to Shopify Status when the admin will not load, and that page notes that issues hitting a small percentage of stores may not show there. Klaviyo’s status page lists campaign and flow email sending separately and offers email alerts, so sign up before the weekend.

If nothing is posted, contact support before you send a copy. A delayed send can still go out hours later, and a rushed duplicate can reach the same people twice.

Are your flows ready for Black Friday traffic?

Check that every automated flow actually sends by the end of October, because a flow can show as live and reach almost nobody. On one direct to consumer store on Shopify, a weekly Klaviyo sequence built for 488 people showed as live for six weeks and reached 13 of them.

It triggered on Added to List, and the list was built before the flow existed.

Bar chart: a weekly email sequence showed as live for six weeks and reached 13 of the 488 people on the list. The scheduled email that replaced it reached 484 people on its first send.
The weekly sequence reached 13 people in six weeks while it showed as live. The scheduled email that replaced it reached 484 on its first send. Source: the store’s Klaviyo account.

A scheduled weekly email replaced it on September 4, 2026, and reached 484 people on its first send on September 8. The five checks in the email audit guide take about ten minutes and are built to catch exactly this.

Then adjust the flows for the sale. Klaviyo’s sending guide suggests three changes:

  • Shorter delays on abandoned cart and browse abandonment flows.
  • Black Friday offers in place of everyday ones.
  • More product recommendations in post-purchase flows.

First, count how many people the cart flow can reach. On one store, the abandoned cart email arithmetic showed a pool of eight people over the 30 days to August 20, 2026. The Klaviyo flows every store needs cover the rest.

Anyone who buys for the first time over the weekend lands in your post-purchase flow. Your post purchase emails decide whether those customers order again in December.

How big should your Black Friday discount be?

Smaller than you think, if your list already trusts you. Klaviyo’s BFCM 2025 report found that brands offering the smallest discounts grew the most, 14 percent year over year.

Daily average discounts across Klaviyo brands never went above 30 percent. Revenue from repeat customers grew 13.5 percent, and Klaviyo says those customers responded to early access, VIP perks and personalized offers rather than blanket discounts.

“This BFCM proved that when brands treat consumers like people, not transactions, they respond”

Andrew Bialecki, co-founder and CEO, Klaviyo, Klaviyo Breaks Records with First AI-powered BFCM

Those are Klaviyo’s figures across 10,000 brands, not a promise about your store. They do support one idea: first access and a fair deal can do the work of a deep cut.

Is your discount real?

The FTC’s guide on former price comparisons sets the test. A former price is a legitimate basis for a comparison when it is the actual price you offered the public for a reasonably substantial period. Setting an inflated price just so you can cut it later is the example it calls false.

Set the Black Friday sale up in Shopify with a start and an end date. Shopify’s discount settings use the time zone in your admin, and a discount with no end date does not expire.

What makes good Black Friday email subject lines?

Good Black Friday email subject lines say the offer, the deadline or the reason to open now, in plain words. They must also be true. The FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide says the subject line must accurately reflect the content of the message.

  • VIP access: Your early access starts Tuesday
  • Teaser: Subscribers shop the sale first, on November 26
  • Launch: Black Friday: 25% off everything until Monday
  • Spend level: $50 off orders over $200, through Monday
  • Reminder: Still thinking about the [product name]?
  • Cyber Monday: Cyber Monday is the last day of the sale
  • Last call: The deal ends at midnight Eastern tonight

In the holiday avalanche, a subject line that only says “last chance” looks like all the others. A specific reason gives people something new to read: the real end time, what is left in stock, or first pick for past customers.

Urgency only works when the deadline is real. The FTC’s 2022 staff report on dark patterns lists fake countdown clocks and limited-time claims with a deadline that resets as pressure tactics.

How should you test subject lines?

On clicks and orders, not opens. Klaviyo’s A/B testing guide lets you pick click rate or placed order rate as the winning metric. It also warns that Apple Mail Privacy Protection can inflate open rates.

On the store in the case study, the screen showed a 92 percent open rate over the 30 days to August 20, 2026. The click rate was 5.31 percent.

Bar chart: the account's screen showed a 92 percent open rate, while the click rate was 5.31 percent.
The screen showed a 92 percent open rate. The click rate on the same account was 5.31 percent. Opens can be machines. Clicks need a person.

Run the tests in October, not on Black Friday. Klaviyo cancels an A/B test automatically when Smart Sending skips everyone in the test pool.

What do the best Black Friday email examples have in common?

The best Black Friday email examples do one job each: one offer, one deadline, one button. The design is simple enough to read on a phone, and the first screen says what the offer is. Here are three to adapt, written as plain parts rather than screenshots.

The content changes, the structure does not. Put the offer and the end date in live text, not only in an image, so it reads even when images do not load.

Add the delivery date that matters to your buyers, such as the last day to order for delivery in time for the holidays, once your carrier confirms it.

Is it legal to send Black Friday promotional emails?

Yes, if they follow the CAN-SPAM Act. The FTC says the law covers all commercial email marketing, not only bulk email, and its compliance guide lists the main rules:

  • Accurate “From” and routing information.
  • A subject line that matches the content.
  • A clear disclosure that the message is an ad.
  • Your valid physical postal address.
  • A clear way to opt out, honored within 10 business days.

The FTC says each separate email in violation can cost up to $53,088. Gmail adds its own rule for senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts. Their marketing emails must support one-click unsubscribe and show a visible unsubscribe link.

Other countries have their own consent rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do you know if your Black Friday emails worked?

Count the orders in Shopify, then compare them with what Klaviyo claims.

Two of Shopify’s standard reports matter here. Total sales by referrer shows the site each sale came from. Sales by discount codes groups revenue by the automatic discount or code used.

Klaviyo counts differently. Its conversion tracking credits an order to an email opened or clicked within the attribution window, five days by default for accounts created after October 9, 2024. Apple Mail’s automatic opens count too, unless you change that setting.

On one store, for August 17 to September 15, 2026, Klaviyo credited email with 23 orders. Shopify’s Total sales by referrer report traced 10 to an email click.

Both are defensible. They count differently, so report both and say which is which.

What do the numbers not prove?

A big weekend does not prove the discount paid for itself. Some of those buyers might have ordered in December at full price.

Compare November and December with last year, and check how many Black Friday buyers were first-time customers. The guide to which Shopify reports show where orders come from explains where to look.

What should you fix first?

Fix the plumbing ahead of the copy. This is the order used in The Traffic to Sales Method:

  1. Run the free Lost Sales Check. It reads Shopify, Google and email side by side to find where orders leak.
  2. Get names. Put an early access sign-up form on the pages that get traffic. One store could identify only about 0.8 percent of its visitors over the 30 days to August 20, 2026; the guide to visitor identification explains why that matters.
  3. Get orders. Confirm every flow sends, fix the Klaviyo settings above, then build the calendar.
  4. Show proof. Judge the weekend by Shopify’s reports, then keep what worked for next year.

On the store in the case study, email brought in $982 (19% of sales) in its slowest 30 days before the work, March 20 to April 18, 2026. In its best 30 days about 90 days in, August 17 to September 15, 2026, email brought in $12,508 (35%). The source is Shopify’s Total sales by referrer report.

One deposit order of $9,480 came 17 minutes after a welcome email click. Without it, email brought in $3,028, still 3 times the baseline. It is one store, not a forecast for yours.

If holiday emails already eat hours every month and you would rather have the setup done inside your own Klaviyo and Shopify accounts, that is what Klaviyo email, done for you covers.

What does a Black Friday email plan look like when it works?

Your early access list fills up in the first half of November. The Tuesday email brings in your best customers while strangers are still seeing ads. Friday’s launch lands in the inbox, the reminders reach the people who clicked, and nobody who already bought gets asked again.

On Tuesday, December 1, you open Shopify, not the email dashboard, and the orders are there with their source. That is what a Black Friday email plan is for: a weekend your own list pays for, instead of your ad account.

Leave it until November and the same list gets one rushed blast. The case study shows what that shift looked like on one store, and done-for-you Klaviyo email is how it gets set up.

Baseline: the worst case before the work
$982 from 5 orders that came in through an email, 19% of sales, March 20 to April 18, 2026.
The work: what changed
Built welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, win-back and high-ticket follow-up emails in Klaviyo (live July 28). Found that the weekly email only went to people who joined the list after it was switched on, so it reached 13 people in six weeks. Replaced it with a scheduled weekly email (September 4) that reached 484 people on its first send (September 8).
Result: the best case after
$12,508 from 10 orders that came in through an email, 35% of sales, August 17 to September 15, 2026, 12.7 times the baseline.
Evidence source
Shopify Analytics, Total sales by referrer, Klaviyo row, pulled September 18, 2026.
What this does not prove
One deposit order, worth $9,480, was placed 17 minutes after the buyer clicked a welcome email. Without it, email brought in $3,028, still 3 times the baseline. Klaviyo credits email with more, 23 orders for the same dates, because it counts any order placed within days of someone opening or clicking an email.
Test it on your store
In Klaviyo, open each flow and compare recipients over the last 30 days with the size of the list it should reach. Then open Total sales by referrer in Shopify for the same 30 days and find the Klaviyo row. A flow reaching a fraction of its list, or a Klaviyo row near zero, is the place to start.

Questions about this.

When is Black Friday 2026?

Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 26, on the federal holiday calendar published by the Office of Personnel Management, and Cyber Monday falls on November 30. Start your Black Friday email sends to engaged subscribers in the first week of November, weeks ahead of the weekend itself.

When should I send Black Friday emails?

Start the first week of November with engaged subscribers, open early access to past customers on the Tuesday before Black Friday, launch on Friday morning, and close with a last call on Cyber Monday evening. Klaviyo's data put the busiest Black Friday 2024 sending hour at 9 to 10 in the morning, Eastern time.

How many Black Friday emails should I send?

A small list can do well with five or six: an early access invitation, a teaser, the launch, one weekend reminder, a Cyber Monday email and a last call. Send every email after the launch only to people who have not ordered, and drop the extra weekend sends if unsubscribes climb.

Should I send Black Friday emails to my whole list?

Send most of them to engaged subscribers and widen the list only for the launch and Cyber Monday. Klaviyo's help center says large promotions such as Black Friday can justify widening your lists, but it warns that sending to unengaged subscribers puts deliverability at risk, and Gmail wants reported spam below 0.3 percent.

Is it illegal to send promotional emails?

No. In the United States, the CAN-SPAM Act allows commercial email if it uses accurate sender details and honest subject lines, identifies itself as an ad, includes a valid postal address and offers a clear opt-out honored within 10 business days. Other countries have stricter consent rules. This is not legal advice.

Why did my Black Friday email not go out?

Usually Smart Sending. Klaviyo turns it on by default for campaigns and skips anyone who received a marketing email in the last 16 hours, such as a teaser sent the night before. Skipped messages are not rescheduled. Klaviyo recommends keeping it on for most emails, so turn it off only for a planned same-day reminder.

What should I do if my Black Friday email is stuck on sending?

Check the status page first: Shopify Status if you send with Shopify Messaging, or Klaviyo's own status page, which lists campaign and flow email sending separately. If nothing is posted, contact support before you resend. A delayed send can still go out hours later, so a rushed duplicate can reach the same people twice.

Will Black Friday emails make people unsubscribe?

Some will, especially if the emails come too often: Klaviyo warns that coming on too strong risks new sign-ups unsubscribing. Keep most sends to engaged people, stop emailing anyone who has bought, and add a preferences link so people can choose fewer emails instead of leaving the list entirely.

What are good Black Friday email subject lines?

Plain ones that state the offer and the deadline, such as Black Friday: 25% off until Monday, or $50 off orders over $200, through Monday. The FTC requires subject lines to match the content, so only promise a deadline you will keep, and test subject lines on clicks and orders.

How do I know if my Black Friday emails worked?

Open Shopify's Total sales by referrer and Sales by discount codes reports for the sale dates, then compare them with Klaviyo's attributed revenue. Klaviyo credits orders placed within days of an open or click, including automatic Apple Mail opens, so expect the two numbers to differ and report both.
