How to connect Shopify to AI: Shopify MCP, ChatGPT and Claude
Someone told you an AI can read your store, run your reports and fix your listings. Part is real, part is a pitch, and one version hands a stranger the keys. Here is what exists, and what to check first.
Shopify MCP is a set of Model Context Protocol servers that let AI agents search a store's catalog, manage carts and read Shopify's developer docs. Reading your own sales data still runs through the Admin API, with a custom app and read-only scopes. Sidekick does the same job inside the admin with no keys to hand over.
What is MCP, in plain words?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting applications such as Claude or ChatGPT to outside systems: files, databases and tools like a search engine (the protocol’s own introduction). It compares itself to a USB-C port: one plug instead of a different cable for each device.
The host is the application you type into; a server is a program that hands the model context and functions (the architecture overview).
The protocol defines tools as executable functions that AI applications can invoke to perform actions, and resources as data sources that provide contextual information. A tool acts. A resource informs.
“the bridges that connect AI to real-world applications”
Dhanji R. Prasanna, Chief Technology Officer, Block, Introducing the Model Context Protocol
Anthropic published the standard on November 25, 2024. A bridge carries traffic both ways; the scope list, not the plug, is the part to read.
What is Shopify MCP, and which Shopify MCP servers exist?
Shopify MCP is not one product. As of September 2026, Shopify runs several servers on the protocol, and none of them is the door to your own sales reports.
| Server | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront Catalog MCP | Products from a single merchant’s catalog | https://{shop}/api/ucp/mcp |
| Global Catalog MCP | Products across the entire Shopify ecosystem | https://catalog.shopify.com/api/ucp/mcp |
| Dev MCP | Docs and API schemas, for developers | Locally, no authentication |
| Storefront MCP, the original | Retired; catalog and cart tools removed | Was https://{shop}/api/mcp |
The Catalog servers speak the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard for agents to connect and transact with any merchant, announced January 11, 2026 (Shopify’s announcement). A shopping agent searches one store through the Storefront Catalog server, with an agent profile on every request, or many stores through the Global Catalog server.
The original Shopify Storefront MCP is gone: the migration page says its catalog and cart tools were removed. The old catalog tools ran until June 15, 2026 (the catalog notice) and the cart tools until August 31, 2026 (the cart notice).
What is the Shopify Dev MCP server?
For developers. Announced March 31, 2025, it lets an assistant search the docs and introspect API schemas (the changelog entry).
The AI Toolkit page says it runs locally, without authentication, with an install command for coding tools including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code. It never touches your orders.
“We rewired the platform to be AI-first and instant.”
Eytan Seidman, VP of Product, Shopify, Unpacking Winter ’26 Edition
Can Shopify be used by AI agents?
Yes, and for most stores it already is. Agentic storefronts let customers discover and purchase your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, active by default for eligible stores (the agentic storefronts help page).
The data behind it is Shopify Catalog, the authoritative product data feed to your agentic channels (Shopify Catalog and product discovery). That is Shopify agentic commerce: your catalog goes out, and buyers who shop in chat come in.
“we’ll make sure Shopify merchants are there and show up strong”
Vanessa Lee, VP of Product, Shopify, Introducing Shopify Agentic Storefronts
Showing up is the promise; being chosen depends on product data, and the ChatGPT shopping guide has the listing checks. The privacy page says the channels get no order history or customer database (data sharing and privacy). A Shopify AI agent sees products and policies, not your books.
What is Shopify Sidekick, and what is it not?
Sidekick is the assistant built into the admin, which the help center calls an AI-enabled commerce assistant. You can use it to read your data directly, generate custom ShopifyQL queries and export reports to CSV, Parquet, JSONL, or XML format (getting help from Sidekick).
Two rails are built in. Sidekick can’t make changes to your store without your approval, and will only present options for you to review and approve (getting started with Sidekick). It respects staff access controls, and it is included with your Shopify plan, with usage limits that vary by plan (Shopify’s Sidekick page).
What Shopify Sidekick is not: a connector. Shopify opens it from the admin or the Shopify app, and documents no way to point ChatGPT or Claude at it. Ask “what sold last week, and from where,” and it answers with no keys handed to anyone (the Shopify Magic and Sidekick guide covers its limits).
How can ChatGPT read your store?
Three ways, and each ChatGPT Shopify link reads something different.
- Shopify Catalog, for shoppers. ChatGPT considers structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and product description (Shopping with ChatGPT search). For Shopify stores that data arrives through Catalog, automatically: the Shopify ChatGPT integration most owners already have.
- A custom MCP connection, for you. ChatGPT developer mode provides full Model Context Protocol client support for all tools, both read and write, on Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts on the web (ChatGPT developer mode). Write actions are in beta for Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, per OpenAI’s help center.
- A third-party bridge, for you. One marketplace listing, launched December 11, 2025, connects catalog, orders, inventory and customers to ChatGPT and Claude (the Gaia Suite listing).
How do you connect Shopify to Claude?
Through a connector. Connectors let Claude access your apps and services, retrieve your data, and take actions within connected services, per Anthropic’s help center.
To connect Shopify to Claude, go to Customize, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste the server’s address, its URL (Get started with custom connectors).
The connection runs from Anthropic’s cloud, not your device, so the bridge must be reachable on the public internet. And Anthropic says to only connect to servers built and hosted by organizations and applications you trust, because malicious servers may include hidden instructions.
Claude Desktop also installs local servers as extensions under Settings, then Extensions (local servers on Claude Desktop), and Claude Code can add Shopify’s Dev MCP with a single command. That connects it to Shopify’s documentation, not your store, the usual Shopify MCP Claude mix-up.
What is the difference between an AI reading your store and acting in it?
Reading returns data. Acting changes it. The protocol draws the line, tools for actions and resources for context, and Shopify draws it again with access scopes.
| Reading your store | Acting in your store | |
|---|---|---|
| Scopes | read_orders, read_products, read_customers, read_reports | write_products, write_orders, write_customers |
| Tools in one open-source Shopify MCP server | get-products, get-orders, get-customers | update-product, delete-product, order-cancel, refund-create |
| Worst case | A wrong number in a chat | A wrong price or a deleted product |
One open-source server exposes 31 tools, and eight of them read; the rest create, update, delete, cancel, refund and set inventory (the shopify-mcp project on GitHub). Installed with the read and write scopes it asks for, an assistant that misreads “clean up the old listings” can delete products.
Sidekick presents changes for your review before applying them; a general-purpose connection has no such rail unless the server adds one.
Which access scopes should a reporting connection have?
Read scopes only, and as few as the questions require. Shopify says to request only the data your app needs to function (Shopify API access scopes).
Any scope that writes a resource also grants read access to it, so request the write scope only when your app needs both.
- read_orders covers orders created within the last 60 days; older orders take read_all_orders, which you must request access to.
- read_customers reaches customer records. Name, address, phone and email fields are protected customer data, and public apps are reviewed before they get it (protected customer data).
- read_reports covers ShopifyQL queries, the language behind Shopify’s reports.
This is how we connect to client stores: the Admin API, a custom app, read-only scopes, for reporting. It can run a report, count sales and never change a price. A person makes changes in the admin, and the report shows the before and after, as in The Traffic to Sales Method.
What should you check before installing a connect-your-store-to-AI app?
Four details, each a minute on the listing or the install screen.
- Which scopes it asks for. If a tool you use for reporting wants write_products or write_orders, ask why.
- Whether it can write at all. One listing offers 92 tools; its free plan is read-only and its paid plan adds write and delete tools (ShopMCP).
- Where your data goes. The vendor’s server sits between your store and the model. Shopify says every app that you install has access to personal information about your account (finding and choosing apps). The Gaia Suite listing, for example, declares access to customer name, email address, physical address, geolocation and IP address.
- How you switch it off. You can revoke access to data by uninstalling the app, and after 48 hours the developer is sent a request to erase your customers’ personal information.
How do you connect Claude or ChatGPT to your store for reporting, step by step?
Steps 1 and 2 take minutes; 3 to 6 take a developer dashboard, or a listing that does them for you.
- Write the questions first. Sales by channel, orders by product, new against returning buyers. If Sidekick answers them, stop here.
- Pick the door. Sidekick inside the admin; a marketplace bridge on a read-only plan; or a custom app with read scopes, the route we use for reporting.
- Create it in the Dev Dashboard. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Apps, click Develop apps, click Build apps in Dev Dashboard, click Create app, name it and click Create (Shopify’s steps). The old admin-only route is closed (why).
- Set read scopes only, then release and install. In the version’s Access section enter read_orders, read_products and read_reports, add read_customers only for buyer names, click Release, then click Install app.
- Handle the credentials like cash. The Dev Dashboard shows a Client ID and Client secret. Keep the secret secure; the access tokens it produces expire after 24 hours (client credentials grant). Never paste them into a chat.
- Point the bridge at the store. A hosted or local bridge takes the credentials and exposes read tools.
- Add it in the assistant. Claude: Customize, Connectors, Add custom connector, paste the server URL. ChatGPT: Settings, Security and login, Developer mode on, create the connector.
- Ask a question you already know the answer to. Total sales for last month, checked against Shopify’s own report (the Shopify analytics guide shows which); if they disagree, the connection is wrong.
- Remove what you stop using. Uninstall it or remove the connector; idle credentials are pure risk.
Is Shopify MCP free, and what does connecting cost?
Each figure below comes from the vendor’s own page.
| Item | Cost, as of September 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sidekick | Included with your Shopify plan; usage limits vary by plan | Shopify’s Sidekick page |
| Shopify plans | Basic $29 a month paid yearly ($39 monthly), Grow $79 ($105), Advanced $299 ($399), Plus from $2,300 | Shopify’s pricing page |
| Custom apps using Shopify APIs | Basic: limited data access. Grow, Advanced, Plus: full data access | The pricing comparison |
| ChatGPT developer mode | Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts | OpenAI’s developer guide |
| Claude custom connectors | Free (one), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise | Anthropic’s help center |
| Third-party bridges | ShopMCP free read-only plan, Pro $19 a month; Gaia Suite free plan to $50 a month, plus usage fees | The listings |
Is Shopify MCP free? The parts Shopify runs are, inside a plan you already pay for; the assistant plans are what you already pay OpenAI or Anthropic, and any bridge is priced by its vendor. People in the US search “shopify mcp” about 1,000 times a month, according to Google (September 2026).
What does connecting your store to AI not do?
It does not make you rank, and it does not get you recommended.
- Google. Its guide says you don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (Google’s AI optimization guide). A connection to your admin is invisible to Google; the AI Overviews guide covers what does count.
- ChatGPT. A product appears in the carousel when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to the shopper’s intent, weighed with available options, price and reviews, per OpenAI. the ChatGPT SEO guide covers what gets a store named.
- Files. Every Shopify store already serves an llms.txt file, and Google ignores it (the llms.txt guide); the generative engine optimization guide has the wider playbook.
A read-only connection is a measurement tool: last month’s orders by channel in one sentence instead of six clicks. Useful, not visibility.
What did we find on our own site, eight days after launch?
Connection and visibility came apart in our own data. This site’s robots.txt allows every AI crawler by name, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot among them.
On September 24, 2026, eleven crawler user agents each fetched a guide with a 200 response, and the site publishes llms.txt. Every door was open.
Eight days after launch we asked the assistants about the site. A ChatGPT-type model with search described it accurately and cited the /expertise/ page with a utm_source=openai tag. Grok described the domain accurately.
Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode did not have the site at all; AI Mode said the domain was “not an active or official website.”
Two assistants described the site; three could not, with the same open doors. No connector, protocol or file made the difference. Pages, time and citations do, which is what the AI search service works on.
What does connecting Shopify to AI look like when it is done right?
A Shopify AI integration done right looks quiet. Your products reach ChatGPT, Copilot and Google through Shopify Catalog because the listings are complete. One connection with read scopes lets Claude or ChatGPT answer “what sold, and from where” in a sentence, and the numbers match Shopify’s own reports.
The Shopify MCP servers do the job they were built for: letting shopping agents find what you sell.
If you would rather have the reporting connection and the Catalog checks set up inside your own accounts, AI search for Shopify stores covers it. The free Traffic to Sales Check reads Shopify, Google and your email side by side first. Leave write scopes with a stranger’s bridge, and the first wrong instruction costs more than any report saves.

Does this sound like your store?
If it does, the service that fixes it is AI search for Shopify stores. You can see the before and after on one store in the case study.
Questions about this.
Is Shopify MCP free?
Shopify's own servers come with the platform: the Dev MCP runs locally with no authentication, and the pricing page lists selling in AI chats on the Basic plan. The only new cost is a third-party bridge, from a free read-only plan to about $19 to $50 a month, as of September 2026.
How do I connect Claude Code to Shopify MCP?
With one command from Shopify's Toolkit page: claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest. The same page has commands for Codex, Cursor and VS Code. That installs the Dev MCP, which runs locally, needs no authentication, and reads Shopify's docs and API schemas.
Can Shopify be used by AI agents?
Yes. Shopify's agentic storefronts, active by default for eligible stores, list your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta through Shopify Catalog. Shopping agents search one store through the Storefront Catalog server, or across stores through the Global Catalog server.
What is the best AI tool for Shopify?
No single one; the tools do different jobs. Use Sidekick first for questions and edits inside the admin: it takes no keys and presents changes for approval. Shopify Catalog puts products in front of shopping agents. A read-only connection suits an owner who wants ChatGPT or Claude to run reports.
Can Claude AI integrate with Shopify?
Yes, in three ways. Claude Code can add Shopify's Dev server for documentation and API schemas. Custom connectors accept a remote server URL, so a bridge with read-only Admin API scopes lets Claude answer questions about orders and products. Connect only servers you trust, per Anthropic.
Is Shopify Storefront MCP still available?
No. Shopify's migration page says the catalog and cart tools on the old /api/mcp endpoint were removed and replaced by the Universal Commerce Protocol at /api/ucp/mcp. The old catalog tools were maintained until June 15, 2026 and the cart tools until August 31, 2026.
Can an AI change my store through an MCP connection?
Only if the connection has write scopes and the server exposes write tools. One open-source server exposes 31 tools, and 23 of them create, update, delete, cancel, refund or set inventory. Any write scope also grants read access, so grant read scopes only for reporting and nothing can be changed.
Does connecting my store to AI help it rank or get recommended?
No. Google says you don't need new machine readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Search or its generative features, and a connection to your admin is invisible to it. ChatGPT surfaces products on relevance to the shopper's intent, price, reviews and the structured data it receives.
