ChatGPT shopping: how Shopify products show up in ChatGPT

Buyers now ask ChatGPT what to buy, and Shopify opts eligible stores in by default. Here is how your items get into those answers, where the sale happens, and how to check whether you actually show up.

The short answer

ChatGPT shopping shows product results with images, prices and links when a question suggests buying intent. As of September 2026, Shopify stores reach it through Catalog by default, and buyers finish on the store's own checkout. You manage it under Sales channels, then Agentic, in your admin.

What is ChatGPT shopping?

ChatGPT shopping is the set of product results the assistant shows when a question suggests buying intent. OpenAI’s help article on shopping says it can show options with images, product details and links to sites where you can learn more or buy (Shopping with ChatGPT Search).

It keeps changing. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI launched richer, more visual shopping, with side-by-side comparisons of reviews and features, for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users (Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT). As of September 2026, its page for merchants says shopping is live for users in the U.S.

For a store owner, the problem is simple. A buyer asks which item fits their need, and the answer shows someone else’s. If your store is missing from that conversation, you lose the sale without ever seeing the buyer.

How does ChatGPT choose which products to show?

By relevance to the question, using product data from many sources. The help article says it considers structured metadata, such as price and description, from first-party and third-party providers, plus other third-party content. It can also show review summaries drawn from public websites.

When several stores sell the same item, the article says they are ranked on availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller. That favors stores with complete, current data and real reviews.

  • Complete data: a clear title, a full description, sizes and specifications.
  • Current data: stock levels and prices that match your store at every moment.
  • Reviews on public pages, so there is something to summarize.
  • Being the maker or primary seller of what you sell, stated plainly.

How do Shopify products get into ChatGPT?

Through Shopify Catalog, automatically. The help article says product data for these stores is already integrated through Catalog, with no additional work required. The merchant page adds that catalogs sold through Shopify or Etsy need no setup or application (Power product discovery in ChatGPT).

“Millions of Shopify merchants are open for business in ChatGPT.”

Mani Fazeli, VP, Product, Shopify, Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT

Large retailers such as Target, Best Buy and Wayfair send their own product feeds through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, according to the March announcement. Your store does not need to. The catch is that Catalog can only pass on what your store holds, so a thin title or a missing image arrives exactly as thin.

What are Shopify agentic storefronts?

Shopify agentic storefronts are the admin feature that sends your catalog to AI channels. As of September 2026, the help center lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, and says the feature is active by default for eligible stores (agentic storefronts help). You manage the channels under Sales channels, then Agentic.

AI channelHow your items get thereWhere the buyer pays
ChatGPTCatalogYour own online store checkout, in ChatGPT’s in-app browser or a new tab
Google AI Mode and GeminiThe Google & YouTube sales channel or Merchant CenterA direct checkout in the channel, if you turn it on
Microsoft CopilotCatalogA direct checkout in the channel, if you turn it on
MetaThe Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channelA direct checkout in the channel, if you turn it on

Orders from these channels show in your admin with channel or referrer attribution, so you can see where each one started.

Can shoppers buy directly within ChatGPT?

Mostly not, for now. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, starting with Etsy sellers in the United States and single-item purchases (Buy it in ChatGPT). In March 2026 it said the first version did not offer the flexibility it wanted, and it began letting stores use their own checkout.

As of September 2026, the merchant page says OpenAI is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience. Shoppers discover and compare in the chat, then complete the purchase on the store’s own site or app.

The help article still says some eligible items may show an Instant Checkout option, so expect the details to keep moving. Bigger brands can also build their own app inside the chat: Walmart launched one in March 2026, per the same announcement.

For your store, the help center is specific: these buyers finish on your online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab. Your branding, selling strategies and payment methods carry over.

Is your store actually showing up in ChatGPT shopping?

You can find out in two checks: a preview inside your admin, then a few real questions in ChatGPT. If you have been flying blind on this, start with the admin.

Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition, published June 17, 2026, added search intelligence. It shows the top AI queries in your category, which ones you rank for, and where you are not showing up yet (the Spring ’26 Edition). Under Sales channels, then Agentic, a search preview runs any query in Catalog search and lists the products of yours that could rank, each with a listing quality meter (managing agentic storefronts).

The listing insights behind that meter check five things:

  • Description completeness, measured by word count.
  • Image coverage, the number of product images.
  • Product reviews: average rating and review count, from reviews verified by trusted sources.
  • Variant and option completeness, including option names with acronyms or numbers that agents find hard to understand.
  • Shop policy completeness: shipping, returns, refunds and other policies.

Treat the preview as a direction, not a verdict. The same help page says AI channels often re-rank results with their own logic, and that relevance also depends on popularity, engagement and brand recognition, which build over time. It adds that acting on the Improve your listing suggestions can make products more discoverable over time.

Then ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, without your store’s name, and note who appears instead.

How do you get products on ChatGPT if yours are missing?

Check eligibility before anything else. The help center lists the requirements for selling on ChatGPT (Selling on ChatGPT) and for being included in Catalog (Catalog requirements). Work through them in this order:

  1. Sell to the U.S. Your store must sell to customers in the United States, though it can be based elsewhere.
  2. Complete your policies. Fill in your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy under Settings, then Policies.
  3. Make each item eligible. It needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, publication to your online store, and no Unlisted status.
  4. Check the channel. Under Sales channels, then Agentic, confirm the ChatGPT channel still has Catalog access and that you have accepted the agentic storefronts terms.
  5. Check account standing. Turn on two-step authentication, fulfill orders promptly and keep chargebacks low.

Two more details from the help center: B2B-only items are not supported, and any legal disclosures belong in the first 6,000 characters of the description.

Complete product data shapes what any AI channel can show. On one direct to consumer store on Shopify, the best sellers were published through the Google and YouTube channel on August 24, 2026. Free listing impressions went from 610 (July 26 to August 24) to 1,567 (August 25 to September 15), per Merchant Center.

The product pages were rewritten in the same weeks, so not all of that comes from publishing. The case study has the full picture.

What have I seen of ChatGPT shopping first-hand?

Not a sale yet. I have not sold a client’s products on ChatGPT’s shopping surfaces, so I will not describe a result I have not seen. What I can show is the work next to it: the product data every AI channel reads, and the crawler access ChatGPT search needs.

The product data first. The store in the case study published its best sellers to Merchant Center with Shopify’s Google and YouTube channel on August 24, 2026. Alongside the impressions above, free listing clicks went from 3 (July 26 to August 24) to 10 (August 25 to September 15), per Merchant Center.

The product pages were rewritten in the same weeks, so not all of that comes from publishing, and the clicks are still small numbers. The same complete titles, photos and specifications are what Catalog passes to ChatGPT.

The access next, on this site. Its robots.txt names every AI crawler as allowed, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User among them, and on September 24, 2026, eleven AI crawler user agents all fetched a guide with a 200 response. That day, eight days after launch, a ChatGPT-type model with search described the site accurately and cited its /expertise/ page.

The link carried utm_source=openai. ChatGPT itself adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its referral links, per the Publishers and Developers FAQ below, so look for both tags in your reports.

That is the whole first-hand record: allowed crawlers, complete data, one citation, and no ChatGPT order yet to count.

What does it cost to sell through ChatGPT?

Nothing beyond your normal payment processing, as of September 2026. The help center says there are no fees for selling there, and OpenAI’s merchant page says there are no fees on a purchase that starts in the chat.

That was not always the case. When Instant Checkout launched in 2025, sellers were told they would pay a small fee on completed purchases. The move to store-owned checkout changed that.

Are ChatGPT product results ads?

No. The help article says product results are selected independently and are not ads, nor influenced by partnerships. Ads are separate.

Ads do exist. On September 16, 2026, OpenAI said U.S. stores on Shopify can use a new ChatGPT Ads app to create and manage campaigns, with items already connected through Catalog (Reimagining advertising with AI).

That is a paid channel. The free product results come first, and they depend on your data, not your budget.

What do shoppers ask ChatGPT?

Specific questions with limits built in. OpenAI’s own examples include best running shoes under $100 and gifts for a ceramics lover. Its shopping research launch used requests like finding the quietest cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment (Introducing shopping research in ChatGPT).

“Shopping in ChatGPT begins with discovery”

Neel Ajjarapu, Commerce Product Lead, OpenAI, Millions of merchants can sell in AI chats

Discovery runs on detail. Each of those requests carries a budget, a use, a size or a recipient.

If your pages never state those facts, a traditional product page with a photo and a price has nothing to match. Write down the questions your buyers ask, ask them in the chat with search on, and note whether your store appears.

What does Google AI Mode do for shopping?

Much the same job, on Google’s own product data. Google says people shop across Google more than a billion times a day, drawing on its Shopping Graph of over 60 billion listings. In May 2026 it announced Universal Cart, an AI shopping cart rolling out across Search and the Gemini app in the U.S., with select checkout features coming to retailers such as Walmart and Wayfair (Introducing the Universal Cart).

“No matter which way you buy, the brand stays the merchant of record.”

Vidhya Srinivasan, VP/GM Ads and Commerce, Google, Introducing the Universal Cart

Your store reaches AI Mode and Gemini through Merchant Center. The AI Overviews guide covers Google’s side, and what Merchant Center is explains the feed.

How do you see sales from ChatGPT in your store?

In your own reports. The help center says orders from AI channels display in your admin with channel or referrer attribution. OpenAI says it automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from its search results (Publishers and Developers FAQ).

As of September 2026, the Agentic section under Sales channels also reports sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion for each AI channel you sell on.

Compare those orders with other channels for the same dates, and judge the channel by orders, not mentions. The store analytics guide shows which reports to open, and the ChatGPT SEO guide covers the crawler checks for your pages.

What does ChatGPT shopping look like when it works for your store?

A buyer asks for exactly what you sell, your item appears with the right details and a real review, and the order lands in your admin with ChatGPT as the source. That is ChatGPT shopping working for you: no ad bill, no new app, just complete data doing its job.

Getting there is The Traffic to Sales Method applied to a new channel: find the gaps, Get Found, then Show Proof in your own reports. The AI search service does that work inside your accounts, and the GEO guide covers the wider picture. If you want to see where your store stands first, run the free Traffic to Sales Check.

Does this sound like your store?

If it does, the service that fixes it is AI search for Shopify stores. You can see the before and after on one store in the case study.

Straight answers

Questions about this.

Is there a ChatGPT for shopping?

Yes. The assistant itself shows product results with images, prices and links when a question suggests buying intent, and OpenAI added richer visual shopping in March 2026. As of September 2026, its page for merchants says shopping is live for users in the U.S. and will reach more regions over time.

Is ChatGPT shopping free for merchants?

As of September 2026, yes. Shopify's help center says there are no fees for selling there beyond standard payment processing, and the assistant's merchant page says there are no fees on a purchase that starts in the chat. Paid ads inside the assistant are a separate option that you can ignore.

Do you need an app to sell on ChatGPT?

No. The assistant's merchant page says catalogs sold through Shopify or Etsy are already integrated, with no setup or application needed, and agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. Just check that your items meet the eligibility rules and that the channel still has Catalog access.

Can you stop your items showing in ChatGPT?

Yes. In your admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic, turn off the automatic setting, open the ChatGPT channel and turn off Catalog access. It can take up to 7 days to stop. Items can still appear through web crawling, so an Unlisted status is the only complete way to hide one.

Where is ChatGPT shopping available?

As of September 2026, the assistant's merchant page says shopping is live for users in the U.S. and will expand to more regions over time. To sell there through your store's catalog, you must sell to U.S. customers, although the business itself can be based outside the United States.

Is there a downside to leaving agentic storefronts on?

The main cost is control, and you can take it back. Shopify says AI channels receive your product data, not your full order history or customer database, and you keep the customer relationship. A channel with direct checkout, such as Copilot, sees the details of orders placed there, and new channels join automatically unless you turn that off.

Do you need to send ChatGPT a product feed?

Not for a Shopify store. OpenAI's merchant page says that if you sell on Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated, with no setup or application needed. It also says a feed is not required for a site ChatGPT already crawls, though feeds give more control. Other merchants can apply to send one.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?

It is the open standard OpenAI co-developed with Stripe for AI commerce. Large merchants use it to share product feeds and promotions with the assistant. Your store does not need to build it, because its data already arrives through Catalog, according to the help article.
