Shopify product image size: what to upload and why
Your photos look fine in the admin but blurry in Google Shopping, cropped in the collection grid or slow to load on a phone. Here are the sizes Shopify and Google actually ask for, and the checks that matter more than pixels.
The best Shopify product image size is a square 2048 x 2048 px, which Shopify says usually displays best. Shopify accepts images up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB. Use one aspect ratio for every main image, and give Google Merchant Center at least 500 x 500 px.
What is the best Shopify product image size?
The best Shopify product image size is 2048 x 2048 px, at a 1:1 ratio. Shopify’s help center says that for square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best.
Here are the image sizes and limits Shopify and Google’s Merchant Center each ask for, as of September 2026:
| Spec | Shopify | Google Merchant Center |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended size | 2048 x 2048 px (1:1). | Around 1500 x 1500 px or above. |
| Minimum | More than 800 x 800 px for zoom to work. | At least 500 x 500 px. |
| Maximum dimensions | 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels. | 64 megapixels. |
| Maximum file size | Smaller than 20 MB. | 16 MB. |
| File types | PNG and JPEG first; also PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP. | JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP and TIFF. |
Add one clean image at the recommended size. When you add an image, Shopify automatically creates different sizes for different areas of your theme, so one good file covers the thumbnail, the main photo and the zoom.
Why does product image size matter for sales and Google?
Because shoppers judge an item by its photos before they read a word. In Baymard Institute’s usability testing, published in 2020, 56% of users’ first actions after arriving on an item were to start exploring its images. Low-quality images, and images that could not be zoomed far enough, caused shoppers to abandon the item.
“many users will instead abandon to try and find this visual information on another site”
Edward Scott, Research Lead, Baymard Institute: Ensure Sufficient Image Resolution and Zoom
That other site is often a competitor sitting in the same Google results.
Google weighs images for the same reason. Its image SEO best practices say sharp images are more appealing to users in the result thumbnail and can increase the likelihood of getting traffic. A blurry thumbnail in Google Shopping loses the click before anyone reaches your store.
The problem is rarely the camera. It is a file that looks fine in the admin and falls apart everywhere else: cropped in the grid, soft when zoomed, heavy on a phone, rejected by Merchant Center. An item that looks right in your hands should look right on a phone and on Google.
What are Shopify's image size requirements?
Shopify accepts product and collection images up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels, and the file must be smaller than 20 MB. Those are ceilings, not targets.
- Recommended: 2048 x 2048 px for main images.
- Zoom: Shopify’s website image size guidelines say that for zoom to work, images must be more than 800 x 800 pixels.
- Compression: images aren’t compressed when you add them in the Shopify admin, which keeps their original quality. Shopify’s help on uploading images says they are then optimized for your storefront by the Shopify content delivery network (CDN), a network of servers that stores copies of your files close to shoppers.
- Color: save in sRGB. Shopify notes that sRGB ensures your images display the same across all major web browsers and devices.
So the job is not to shrink every photo to the size a theme shows it. Add one sharp, reasonably light original, and Shopify makes the smaller image sizes each theme needs.
What aspect ratio is best for Shopify product images?
Square (1:1) is the safe default, and consistency matters more than the ratio itself. An aspect ratio is the width of an image compared with its height: 1:1 is square, and 4:5 is a portrait rectangle.
Shopify’s help center says that to make images display at the same size, you need a consistent aspect ratio for all the images you add as featured, or main, images. Mixed ratios are why a collection grid looks ragged, with a tall photo beside a wide one.
Themes can also show one image at different ratios on different screens. Shopify’s focal point setting gives you more control over how an image will display on varying screen sizes and when themes use different aspect ratios.
Should your main images be square or portrait?
Square fits every grid and matches Shopify’s 2048 x 2048 recommendation. Portrait gives tall items more room on a phone. Pick one ratio, use it for every main image, and match your theme’s card settings to it where the theme offers that option.
Which image format is best for Shopify?
JPEG for photographs, PNG for graphics with flat colors or transparency. Shopify’s specifications name PNG as the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG. Its advice on uploading images calls JPEG ideal for photography and PNG ideal for graphics and icons with flat colors.
The format a shopper downloads is chosen for them. Shopify’s image_url filter documentation says Shopify detects which formats the browser supports, such as WebP and AVIF, and selects a file format for optimal quality and file size. GIFs are converted to animated WebP automatically.
Do you need to convert images to WebP first?
No. WebP is a modern image format from Google, and its WebP documentation puts lossy WebP images at 25 to 34 percent smaller than comparable JPEGs. Shopify’s CDN already serves WebP or AVIF to browsers that support them, so converting before you add the file is rarely worth the step.
For search, format is not a worry either: Google Search supports BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF.
How big should product image files be?
Aim for a few hundred kilobytes, not megabytes. Shopify’s image size guidelines say smaller images, around 500 kilobytes, are better in most cases, and suggest about 300 KB for product photos. They also warn that anything bigger than 20 megabytes can dramatically impact your website speed.
File size is the weight of the file in kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB), and it is separate from its dimensions in pixels. Two photos at 2048 x 2048 px can differ in file size many times over, depending on compression: the process that removes detail the eye barely notices.
Optimize large photos before you add them: export at 2048 px and save at a quality that keeps the file to a few hundred kilobytes. Google’s image guide explains why it matters: images are often the largest contributor to overall page size, which can make pages slow and expensive to load.
“users will thank you if your images load quickly”
Martin Splitt, Developer Advocate, Google, August 2024 Google SEO office hours
A heavy photo costs the most on a slow phone connection, which is exactly where a shopper gives up first.
Should you upload full-size photos if Shopify resizes them anyway?
No need: upload at 2048 x 2048 px and let Shopify make the smaller copies. Themes ask Shopify for a copy at a set width or height, so shoppers download that copy, not your original. Extra pixels above 2048 only show where a theme asks for a bigger copy, such as a full-screen zoom.
If you paid for a professional shoot, shrinking the files can feel like throwing money away. It is not: 2048 px clears the 800 px that zoom needs and Merchant Center’s recommended 1500 px.
The limit runs the other way. Shopify’s image_url documentation says an image can never be resized to be larger than its original dimensions, so a small original stays soft wherever a theme shows it large.
| What you add | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5000 x 5000 px, several MB | Accepted, up to 25 megapixels and 20 MB. Shoppers still get resized copies, so the extra pixels and weight rarely reach them. |
| 2048 x 2048 px, a few hundred KB | Shopify’s recommendation. Sharp in zoom, above Merchant Center’s recommended size, and close to Shopify’s suggestion of about 300 KB for product photos. |
| 1500 x 1500 px | Enough for zoom and for Merchant Center’s recommendation, with less headroom for large screens. |
| 800 x 800 px or smaller | Too small for zoom, which needs more than 800 x 800 px. No copy can be larger than this original. |
If pages still feel slow with 2048 px photos, look at the file weight first, then at how the theme loads the main image, which the loading section below covers.
What Shopify image size do banners, hero images and logos need?
Wide sections need wide images. Here are Shopify’s recommended image sizes for them, from its website image size guidelines, as desktop starting points:
| Image | Desktop size | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Website banner | 1200 x 400 px | 3:1. |
| Hero image | 1280 x 720 px | 16:9. |
| Blog image | 1200 x 800 px | 3:2. |
| Logo, rectangle | 400 x 100 px | 4:1. |
| Product thumbnail | 150 to 300 px | 1:1. |
A hero image is the large image at the top of a page; a banner is a wide strip across it. The best image size for a banner or hero depends on the shape of your theme’s section, and themes crop them differently on phones, so preview each one on mobile devices before you publish.
Keep words out of banner and slideshow images. Shopify’s help center says images used for slideshows or backgrounds shouldn’t have text in them.
“The only variation I'd avoid is putting text into the image file”
John Mueller, Search Relations Lead, Google, April 2024 Google SEO office hours
Text inside a picture is hard for search engines and some shoppers to read, so set the headline and offer as real text over the image.
Why is my Shopify logo so small?
Usually because of a setting, not the file. Shopify’s theme settings help says to use the Desktop logo width range slider to adjust the logo pixel width, and notes that logo images have a maximum width of 300 px. Raise the slider, and crop empty space from around the logo so the mark itself fills that width.
What image size does Google Shopping need?
At least 500 x 500 px, and ideally around 1500 x 1500 px or larger. As of September 2026, Merchant Center’s image link requirements set those numbers, allow no image larger than 64 megapixels or 16 MB, and accept JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP and TIFF. A 2048 x 2048 Shopify image clears every one of them.
The rules beyond size matter just as much:
- Show the entire item, with minimal or no staging.
- Frame it so it fills no less than 75% and no more than 90% of the image.
- Use a solid white or transparent background; lifestyle images that clearly show the item are also acceptable.
- Leave off promotional elements: calls to action, prices, watermarks and logos.
- Don’t scale up a small image or submit a thumbnail.
Merchant Center also points to Product Studio, available within the Google and YouTube app in Shopify, which can increase resolution and remove backgrounds. The same images feed Google’s free listings, so a clean Shopify product feed starts with clean photos. If Merchant Center itself is new to you, start with what Google Merchant Center does.
What Google shows depends on what it is given. On one direct to consumer store on Shopify, the best sellers were published through Shopify’s Google and YouTube channel on August 24, 2026. Before that, Google showed thin versions it found on its own: 610 impressions and 3 clicks from July 26 to August 24, then 1,567 and 10 from August 25 to September 15.
Source: the Merchant Center performance report, free listings only. The product pages were rewritten in the same weeks and the click counts are still small, so this is not proof about images alone.
How do you write Shopify alt text for product images?
Alt text is a short written description of an image. Shopify shows it if the image can’t load, and assistive technology reads it to shoppers who are visually impaired. Google’s image guidance calls alt text the most important attribute for giving an image more metadata, and says Google uses it, along with computer vision and the content of the page, to understand what an image shows.
To add it, following Shopify’s alt text instructions:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Click the name of the item you want to edit.
- Click an image to open the Preview media view.
- Click Add alt text.
- Enter the alt text, then click Save alt text.
Shopify allows up to 512 characters but recommends 125 or fewer. Describe what the image shows in the words a buyer would use: color, material, angle, what is in the box. Google asks for useful, information-rich alt text that uses keywords appropriately, and warns that stuffing alt attributes with keywords may cause a site to be seen as spam.
“some accessibility features such as image alt attribute is actually really useful information for Googlebot”
Martin Splitt, Developer Advocate, Google, December 2023 Google SEO office hours
Write it for the shopper first, and the same words help Google understand the photo.
Shopify’s media editor can also suggest AI-written alt text for images that have none. Read each suggestion before you save it, because a generic description helps no one. The words around the photo count too, which is where strong product descriptions come in.
Do image file names matter?
A little. Google’s example is that my-new-black-kitten.jpg is better than IMG00023.JPG, and Gary Illyes of Google has called descriptive file names generally helpful a little. Rename files before you add them.
Camera metadata will not help. Illyes has also said Google doesn’t use EXIF data for anything at the moment.
What does an alt text pass look like on a real catalog?
Slower than it sounds, and it changes nothing about the images themselves. On one store with 124 products, 71% of its images had no alt text at the start.
The catalog pass gave every one of the 124 products image alt text, along with a product type, a search title and a meta description, and fixed six wrong product titles and a broken FAQ schema. Source: the store’s work record of September 17, 2026.
Be clear about what that pass did not touch. Alt text is a label, not a file. It did not resize a single photo, change a format, cut a kilobyte or fix an aspect ratio.
A catalog with complete alt text can still have a soft main image and a ragged collection grid, and a catalog of sharp 2048 px photos can still tell Google nothing about what is in them. The two jobs sit in the same product editor and answer different questions.
What it does not prove: there is no before and after click number for the alt text. Search Console on that store was only verified on September 8, with data backfilled to August 30, so there was no earlier window to compare against.
On the same store, Merchant Center showed an empty feed until a shipping setting was fixed on September 15, 2026, and the first products were accepted the same day. That was never an image problem, which is why the checklist below starts with Merchant Center.
How do your photos affect loading speed?
When the main photo is the largest element on screen, it sets Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), the Core Web Vital that measures how long the main content takes to appear. web.dev’s LCP guide says a good LCP is 2.5 seconds or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads.
Three image habits protect it:
- Don’t lazy-load the main image. Lazy loading holds an image back until the shopper scrolls near it. web.dev’s advice on optimizing LCP warns never to lazy-load your LCP image.
- Give every image a width and height. web.dev’s article on layout shift lists images without dimensions as a common cause of a poor Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), the jump when a page moves as it loads.
- Serve the right size. Themes request resized copies through Shopify’s image_url filter, which can scale an image to any width up to 5760 px, so a well-built theme sends a phone a smaller copy instead of the full original.
Test real product pages, not only the homepage, on a phone connection. The full list of what slows a store, apps included, is in Shopify speed optimization.
How do you check the images already in your store?
Work from the images Google sees first to the ones shoppers see most. A simple order:
- Start with Merchant Center. Google says it can’t accept images that miss its requirements, so fix any image issues it lists before anything else.
- Check the main image on your top sellers. Is it 1:1, at least 2048 px, and a few hundred kilobytes? Shopify’s media editor can crop to a square and resize an image to change its actual size.
- Fill in alt text for every main image, starting with the items that get the most visits.
- Test your two or three busiest listings on mobile for LCP and layout shift.
- Keep one ratio for every new main image from here on.
If you replace images and their web addresses change, John Mueller of Google recommends redirecting the old image URLs to the new ones, and notes that images tend to be recrawled less frequently. The mechanics are in the guide to Shopify redirects.
Image fixes are one line in a longer list. The free Traffic to Sales Check reads Shopify, Google and email side by side to show where visitors drop off, so the image work starts on the product pages that lose the most sales.
What does the right Shopify product image size look like in practice?
Every main image is square, sharp when zoomed and quick to display on a phone. The collection grid lines up, Google Shopping shows a clean photo on white, and alt text tells shoppers and Google what they are looking at.
Getting the Shopify product image size right is part of the Get Found stage of The Traffic to Sales Method: products and pages showing on Google without paying for ads. If you would rather have the catalog checked and fixed for you, that is part of Shopify SEO, done for you.
Left as it is, a blurry or rejected photo quietly costs the click before anyone reads a word of the description.

Does this sound like your store?
If it does, the service that fixes it is Shopify SEO, done for you. You can see the before and after on one store in the case study.
Questions about this.
What size should product images be on Shopify?
Upload square images at 2048 x 2048 px, the size Shopify says usually displays best. Shopify accepts up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 megapixels under 20 MB. Zoom needs more than 800 x 800 px, and Google Merchant Center wants at least 500 x 500 px, ideally around 1500 x 1500.
Which image format is best for Shopify?
Use JPEG for photographs and PNG for graphics with flat colors or transparency. Shopify's help center names PNG as the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG. Shopify then serves WebP or AVIF to browsers that support them, so you rarely need to convert files yourself.
What aspect ratio is best for Shopify?
Square, 1:1, is the safest choice for main images, because it fits every grid and matches Shopify's 2048 x 2048 recommendation. What matters most is using the same aspect ratio for every main image, which Shopify says is needed for images to display at the same size.
Why is my Shopify logo so small?
The theme draws the logo at the width set by the Desktop logo width slider in the theme settings, and Shopify notes that logo images have a maximum width of 300 px. Raise the slider, and crop empty space from around the logo file so the mark fills the space.
Does Shopify compress images when you upload them?
No. Shopify's help center says images aren't compressed when you add them in the admin, which keeps the original quality. Shopify's CDN then optimizes them for the storefront and creates smaller sizes, so bring very large photos down to a few hundred kilobytes before you add them.
What image size does Google Shopping require?
As of September 2026, Merchant Center requires images of at least 500 x 500 pixels and recommends around 1500 x 1500 or larger. Images can be up to 64 megapixels and 16 MB. The item should fill 75 to 90 percent of the frame, with no promotional text or watermarks.
How long should Shopify alt text be?
Shopify allows up to 512 characters but recommends 125 or fewer. Describe what the image shows in plain words a buyer would use, such as the color, material and angle. Google asks for useful, information-rich alt text and warns against stuffing it with keywords.
Should I upload full-size photos if Shopify resizes them anyway?
No need. Export them at 2048 x 2048 px instead. Themes request resized copies, so extra pixels only show where a theme asks for a bigger one, such as zoom, and no copy can be larger than the original. 2048 px clears zoom and Google Shopping, and Shopify's guidelines suggest about 300 KB for product photos.
Do I need separate product images for mobile?
No. Add one image per view and let the theme handle screen sizes. Shopify automatically creates different sizes for different areas of your theme, and a well-built theme sends a phone a smaller copy than a desktop. Check on a phone that the crop still shows the whole item.
Can a product image be too big for Shopify?
Yes. Shopify will not take images over 5000 x 5000 px, 25 megapixels or 20 MB. Well below those limits, a heavy file still slows the page: Shopify's image size guidelines suggest around 500 KB for most images and about 300 KB for product photos.
